Hints for download files

Here is a short introduction to downloading files from this server.

Macintosh

1. Decoding binhexed files

If the file you want is a binhexed archive, it usually ended with a .HQX extension. After you downloaded the file to disk, you will need a de-binhexed software to decode it.

An example is StuffIt Expander. By dragging your binhexed file to StuffIt Expander, it will be decoded automatically.

2. Decompress file

If the file is self-extracting, you only need to double-click on it to de-compress it.

If it is a StuffIt compressed archive, drag it to StuffIt Expander to decompress it.

3. Launch your application

If the file is a Marcomedia Director projector,  you only need to double-click on it to run it.

Windows/DOS

1. Decoding uuencoded file

If the file you want is a uuencoded archive, it usually ended with a .UUE extension. After you downloaded the file to disk, you will need a uudecoder software to decode it. For Windows users, you can use programs like Sabasoft's UUcode for Windows  to decode the file.

For DOS users, an example for program that will decode file is uud-decode by Richard Marks. At your DOS prompt

C:\TEMP>uud fillorb.uue

UU-DECODE 5.25 FOR PC. by Richard Marks

Destination is FILLORB.ZIP
Decoding FILLORB.ZIP, Section 1
input section passed sum -r and size tests
output file passed sum -r and size tests
Completed decode of file FILLORB.ZIP

2. Unzip compressed file

Usually the file is compressed to save disk space. If the file ends with a .ZIP extension, it is a ZIP compressed file. For Windows users, you can use programs like WinZIP for Windows  to unzip the file.

For DOS users, you will need a copy of PKUNZIP to de-compress it.
